This just in from the Herald: Act leader Rodney Hide’s indignation at the Electoral Finance Act is nothing but a jacket jack-up.The complaint to the Electoral Commission about Mr Hide’s canary-yellow jacket was made by an Act supporter.It has been revealed the complainant is 21-year-old Andy Moore, a University of Canterbury commerce student and “strong Act supporter”….Mr Hide today said he was embarrassed and pissed off at Mr Moore. I was alerted by one of my parliamentary sources to a minor controversy about an ACT leaflet, specifically, whether it was in breach of the Electoral Finance Act (EFA) 2007. According to a report by Audrey Young in the New Zealand Herald last week: The commission agreed that the Act booklet Not Your Typical Party was an election advertisement but is not sure it was “published” when it was distributed to journalists at the Act Party conference. The reaction from ACT to the speeches given this week by John Key and Helen Clark is extremely interesting. Today I was fortunate enough to tune into Radio Live just after the 1pm news to hear that Rodney Hide was going to be hosting the afternoon slot (1-4pm) solo. Last week reports to this blog said that he had been paired with Willie Jackson in a left-right battle. I was able to listen until 2 o’clock and I have to say that Radio Live made an inspired choice. It’s interesting that ACT and Rodney Hide were overshadowed in the New Zealand Herald‘s coverage of the opposition to the Electoral Finance Bill by other small parties, most notably the Maori Party. In the report space was given only for a comment by Hide in a collection of quotes from MPs opposing the bill. It wasn’t a particularly exciting comment – perhaps that’s why it came last, even after the Progressives (the 1 MP party).
